Pricing: Benefits and Hidden Risks
Expanded lithium salt capacity and slower demand growth have brought cell prices well down from previous peaks. For energy storage integrators and EV makers, this is clearly a window to reduce costs. However, low-price competition also creates risks: some second- and third-tier manufacturers cut quality control to win orders, leading to more cases of poor cell consistency and unmet cycle life.
Safety and Compliance: Regulation Is Tightening
Both domestic and international regulation is tightening. China has strengthened fire acceptance and grid-connection safety requirements for energy storage stations. The EU Battery Regulation imposes more detailed requirements on carbon footprint, battery passport, and recycled content. A merely "cheap" cell without complete certification and traceable data may cause much higher costs during export or project acceptance.
Technology: LFP Remains Mainstream
LFP remains the dominant route. There is frequent news about solid-state battery pilot production and semi-solid commercialization, but large-scale commercialization still needs time. Companies should focus on which suppliers can deliver solid safety and cycle life in mature chemistries, rather than chasing concepts.
Sourcing Recommendations
Beyond price comparison, we suggest checking three things: first, whether cells have passed key safety tests such as GB/T, UL, and IEC; second, whether suppliers can provide batch consistency data and actual cycle life test reports; third, for overseas markets, whether carbon footprint reports and battery passport readiness are available. Lower prices can be pursued, but not at the expense of long-term reliability.
